Kohlrabi
Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes
Kohlrabi grows a swollen, spherical stem just above ground level, with a mild, sweet flavour somewhere between turnip, cabbage, and apple. It is fast-growing, versatile (good raw in slaws, roasted, or stir-fried), and comes in striking green or purple forms.

Fast and Simple
Kohlrabi is one of the least demanding brassicas and one of the fastest to mature. Sow in succession from early spring to midsummer for a continuous harvest. It handles both light frosts and summer heat well.Succession Sowing
Sow small batches every 3–4 weeks from March to July to avoid a glut. Kohlrabi turns woody and pithy if left too long in the ground after reaching full size.Varieties
Green varieties are faster-maturing and better for summer. Purple varieties are hardier and good for autumn growing. The flesh inside is always pale and similar in both.Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil. Less demanding than most brassicas — tolerates poor soil better.
