When to Water

The best time to water is early morning, when temperatures are lower and evaporation rates are minimal. Water applied in the morning has time to penetrate to root depth before the heat of the day. Evening watering can leave foliage wet overnight, encouraging fungal diseases.

Water deeply and infrequently rather than little and often. A light sprinkle encourages shallow roots near the surface; a thorough soak once or twice a week encourages roots to grow deep into the soil, where moisture is more consistent and the plant becomes more drought-tolerant.

What to Water

Focus water at the root zone, not on the leaves. A slow trickle from a watering can at the base of each plant is far more effective than a hose sprinkler that wets everything.

Certain crops have a critical watering period:

  • Peas and beans: water heavily when in flower and when pods are forming
  • Tomatoes: consistent watering prevents blossom end rot and fruit splitting; irregular watering causes blossom end rot
  • Courgettes and cucumbers: high water demand throughout the season
  • Root crops: consistent moisture for even root development; drought causes splitting when rain returns

Mulching to Conserve Moisture

Mulching — covering the soil surface with a layer of material — is the most effective way to reduce water loss. A 7–10cm layer of straw, composted wood chip, or well-rotted compost reduces evaporation dramatically, suppresses weeds, and moderates soil temperature.

Apply mulch when the soil is already moist. Mulching dry soil traps the drought in.

Historical Bad Practice

The invention of overhead irrigation systems in the 20th century, while enormously productive, brought significant problems. Wet foliage is more susceptible to disease; irrigation from aquifers at unsustainable rates is depleting groundwater globally. Drip irrigation, which delivers water directly to root zones, is a more efficient and sustainable alternative.
