Ethics and Philosophy

Profit is good, but exploitation is not, or "A fair days work for a fair days pay"

The Gardeners Calendar started life from the need of one person. Over the years it has evolved into a reference used by millions of people around the world.

As it has grown we put in place some guiding principles to give us a sound ethical philosophy towards the business we run and the people we deal with. We put people before profit, and the planet ahead of production processes.

As our business develops we shall continue to apply these principles not because we need to but because we want to, these are our ethics.

We will also expect our supply chain to fit with our philosophy and shall reject suppliers with bad ethics.

Our philosophy is to work with the environment rather than live off it, we feel it is important for a business to set these standards as the majority of our waking time is spent at work, so our office space uses low energy lighting, and our computers are the most efficient we can buy. We recycle all glass, metal, paper, and plastics (where possible). We compost all vegetation, and some of the cardboard. We actively look for environmentally kind solutions to our problems.

In the future we are looking to move our office, the new building will not only be built/re-built using materials from the local environment, it will exceed all the current building regulations for energy efficiency, and it will generate it's own electricity from renewable sources. Water and waste material will be managed on site with little or no impact to the surrounding area. Employees will be sourced from the local area and we shall invest in their future rather than import people from outside the area to fill skills gaps.

Now you know about our Ethics and our Philosophy. We hope, in the not too distant future, all companies will work in this way and we can start living in a more ethical world.
